The Kuma River is amongst the three most rapid flowing rivers in Japan. The Kuma River Cruise offers two courses. One is the rapid stream course and the other is the slow stream course. Both courses use wooden boats to cruise down the river. The rapid stream course is available between April and October, and the slow stream course, throughout the year. ‘Kotatsu Bune (A small table with an electric heater underneath and covered by a quilt) are available on the boats between the colder months of December through March. The Kuma River Boat Cruise was originated by Lord Sagara of the Hitoyoshi clan, in the Edo Era. The clan lords were obligated to split their time between Edo and their feudal domain (sankinkotai). So river travel was the most effective method of transport.
