The magnificent caldera reaches 24 kilometers from north to south, and 18 kilometers east to west. Craggy volcanic peaks cover an area of 4 kilometers from its centre.The peaks are known as Aso Gogaku (the five peaks of Aso) which consist of Mt. Neko, Mt. Taka, Mt. Naka, Mt. Eboshi, and Mt. Kishima. Mt. Naka is the most active peak of the 5 and continuously smoking. Mt.Naka is the main attraction of the area which is amongst the largest caldera in the world. Its crater’s diameter is 600m, and its depth is 130m with a circumference of 4 km. The visitors can enjoy its lively and dynamic scenery along with the enormous crater. When it’s particularly active, approaching the crater isn’t permitted. Take the 900 meter Mt. Aso ropeway or drive by car to get to the crater and you will feel the breadth of the area.
