MEGANE BRIDGE (SPECTACLES BRIDGE)

Megane Bridge or Spectacles Bridge is an old stone arch bridge constructed over the Nakashima River in Nagasaki. The bridge was originally built in 1634 by the Chinese monk Mozi from the Kofuku-ji Temple. It is now designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan and remains known as one of country’s oldest stone bridges. Along with the Nihonbashi Bridge in Tokyo and the Kintaikyo Bridge in Iwakuni, Megane Bridge is amongst the three most famous bridges in Japan. The name Megane (Spectacles) Bridge comes from the reflection from the Nakashima River which produces two round shapes like that of a pair of spectacles. Following a deluge on the river Nakashima in 1982 several bridges over the river, including parts of the Megane Bridge were either badly damaged or washed away. Fortunately most of the stones were recovered and the bridge was restored to its original beauty. Since 1948, cars have been prohibited from crossing the bridge. During the spring time, many flowers bloom on the sides of the bridge making for a wonderful view. Hidden near the bridge is a heart shaped stone, which if found, can be wished upon to gain eternal love.
