Takeo Onsen

The hot spring here is weak alkali simple spring. It is transparent spring of renowned quality, whose texture is soft on the skin. A historical record tells us that famous historical figures such as Date Masamune, the warlord of the 16th century, and Miyamoto Musashi, the famous swordsman from the same era, used hot springs here.
Takeo Onsen Romon Gate, which is located in the central area of the city and colored beautifully in red, and Takeo Onsen Shinkan Building are the symbols of the city. Both of them were designed by Tatsuno Kingo, who is known as a designer of Tokyo Station. These architectures were designated as nationally important cultural properties in 2005 and in 2015, met the 100th anniversary of their foundation.
Tonosama-Yu located next to Takeo Onsen Shinkan is a spot you have to check out. It is a bath made all with marble stone in the mid Edo Period exclusively for the Nabeshima Family, then dominant clan of Takeo. It is now available as a rental bath and comes with a waiting room of about 4 and 3 tatami mat size. As you can rent the bath for your exclusive use, especially on weekdays at discount rate, this is a perfect spot for you to visit with your family and spend some relaxing time. Some other attractive hot springs in the area include Motoyu, which has a unique retro atmosphere, and Saginoyu, which features outdoor bath and sauna. There are also ones you can enjoy bathing more cheaply at 400 to 600 yen.

I wanted to avoid a crowded place to spend my leisure time in my third visit to Kyushu. Too much touristic destination makes me a bit tired and I like a real Japanese scenery as it is. My Japanese friend invited me to go to Takeo Onsen, because I have interest in pottery. He suggested to visit some craftsmen nearby. Actually I was fascinated by their works!
Takeo area is surrounded by beautiful forests and have cozy and hushed atmosphere. Walking in a small town, I feel nostalgic. If you rent a car, it’s easy to access and visit around craft factories.
